“Biosafety is not the intent of this new government policy. It will only facilitate the entry of more genetically-modified organisms (GMOS) into the country. This is bio-entry, not biosafety.” Such is the assertion of the RESIST! Agrochemical TNCs Network, which held a picket in front of the Department of Agriculture in Quezon City on Monday, January 30. The group, composed of farmers, scientists, environmental activists, health professionals, NGOs and development workers, protests against the on-going consultation by the National Commission on Biosafety in the Philippines (NCBP) for the Manual on Biosafety Decision Making Process, which details the processes and forms for a proposed GMO to be studied, tested and eventually commercialized in the country. The group emphasized that the consultation is just a way to hasten the institutionalization of a policy that would make it easier for GMOs to enter the country, without a comprehensive safety, environmental impact and socio-economic impact study. |

The Magsasaka at Siyentipiko para sa Pag-unlad ng Agrikultura (MASIPAG) is saddened with the loss of Fr. Fausto ‘Pops’ Tentorio, a leading advocate of life and justice. We in MASIPAG joins the family, friends and thousands of marginalized sectors, small farmers and indigenous peoples’ call that immediate justice be served for the senseless killing ofFr.Pops.
As we remember Father Pops, we also remember the more than 8.4 million families going to bed with nothing to eat, whose right to adequate food has been trampled upon by the interests of a few to gain more profits thru mining and other development aggression in agriculture such as plantations, genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and biofuels among others. |

On the 26th anniversary of the Philippine Rice Research Institute (Philrice), more than a hundred members of farmer-scientist group MASIPAG (Magsasaka at Siyentipiko para Pag-Unlad ng Agrikultura) marched to its research station in Muñoz, Nueva Ecija to slam its project to field test Golden Rice. Golden Rice is genetically modified rice that produces β-carotene, a precursor of Vitamin A, and is being promoted as a solution to address the problem of Vitamin A deficiency in the country.
Young children and pregnant women are the most vulnerable sectors to Vitamin A deficiency (VAD). VAD is said to be the leading cause ‘nightblindness’ amongst children. Further, the lack of such nutrient could worsen diseases such as diarrhea and measles. Data also suggests that about 250,000 children around the world go blind because of the lack of Vitamin A in their diet. |
